The “Go Bag”

Your Secure Exit Checklist: The “Go-Bag”

When preparing to leave an abusive situation, your safety is the absolute priority. A “Go-Bag” is a collection of essential items hidden in a safe place (like at a trusted friend’s house, a workplace locker, or a hidden waterproof bag) that allows you to leave quickly without having to return for necessities.

1. Critical Documentation (Originals or Photos)

If you cannot take the originals, take clear photos and upload them to a secure, hidden cloud storage or email them to a dedicated “safe” email address.

  • Identification: Passports, Birth Certificates (yours and your children’s), Driver’s License, and Community Services Card.
  • Legal Papers: Marriage/Civil Union certificates, Protection Orders, Parenting Orders, or any current Court documents.
  • Financials: Bank cards, latest bank statements, and your IRD number.
  • Medical: Immunization records for children, current prescriptions, and health insurance details.

2. Physical Essentials for Survival

  • Cash: Hide small amounts of cash over time. Accessing shared bank accounts can be tracked or blocked immediately after you leave.
  • Spare Keys: A spare set of car keys and house keys (for your new location or a friend’s place).
  • Communication: An extra “burner” phone with a pre-paid SIM card and a portable power bank. Ensure the abuser does not have the number.
  • Medication: A 7-day supply of any essential daily medications for you or your children.

3. Personal and Comfort Items

  • Clothing: Two changes of clothes for everyone and several pairs of underwear/socks.
  • Toiletries: Toothbrush, pads/tampons, and basic hygiene items.
  • Sentimental Items: Small, irreplaceable photos or pieces of jewelry that you cannot bear to lose.
  • For the Children: One favorite small toy, a blanket, or a “comfort object” to help them feel safe in a new environment.
